First attracted attention by his " Little Messenger " in 1836 and continued to exhibit at the Paris Salon for many years , his best pictures distinguished for minute detail being the 'Napoleonic Cycle' Meissonier served in the Italian campaign for the early part of the Franco-Prussian war , and was Colonel at the siege of Paris .
