' Portrait of A.H.Mackmurdo ' Sir Frank Brangwyn RA (English 1867-1956) Red chalk on cream laid paper , circa 1945 . Royal Academy of Arts , London
Portrait drawings of artists by their friends form a major part of the Royal Academy's collection . Here Frank Brangwyn has drawn the arts and crafts architect A.H.Mackmurdo , his lifetime mentor who had died three years before . As the curator Nick Savage explains : 'The point of this drawing was not to record Mackmurdo's remarkable physiognomy ...but to use the magic of drawing to conjure up as vivid as possible a memory of an old friend '
