' Pollice Verso ' Jean-Léon Géróme . French (1824-1904) Oil on canvas, circa 1872. Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona
' Pollice Verso ' (from Latin-"with a turned thumb" ) painting by Géróme featuring the Roman gesture directed to winning gladiators. Gérome's depiction of the Colosseum's architecture is based upon accurate drawings and the armour of the gladiators follows the design of those found in Pompeii.
