' The Judgement of Soloman ' Workshop of Peter-Paul Rubens . Oil on canvas, circa 1611-1614. Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.
This painting by an unknown hand from the workshop of Peter-Paul Rubens is not documented until 1746, when it belonged to the collection of Queen Elizabeth Farnese in Madrid..........The wise King Soloman was asked to judge between the claims of two women who had each given birth to a child at the same time . When one of the babies died , both women claimed the remaining infant. To determine the truth , Soloman ordered his guards to cut the living child in half and give a portion to each . The real mother immediately ran forward to prevent the act , so that her child would be spared .

This scene is reminiscent in style to Reubens Sampson and Delilah .
