' A portrait miniature of a Lady , wearing a white dress, a white bandeau in her powdered hair. ' Andrew Plimer (English 1763-1837) Watercolour on ivory, oval, 2.5/8 inches (92mm) high. Private collection.
Andrew Plimer was the son of a Shropshire clock-maker. Together with his brother Nathanial, he ran away to London, finding employment as a manservant to the artist Richard Cosway. This was an extremely fortuitous position as it enabled Plimer to assist Cosway as his studio assistant. When his natural ability as a painter became obvious, Cosway taught him the techniques of miniature painting. By 1785, Plimer had set up his own studio in Great Maddox Street and in 1786 exhibited his first portrait miniature at the Royal Academy.
