'The Hunters in The Snow' Pieter Brueghel the Elder (Dutch 1525-1569) Oil on wood , circa 1565. Kunsthistorisches Museum , Vienna One of the most famous landscape paintings of the Northern Renaissance , 'Hunters in the Snow' was originally part of a series of twelve landscapes (Twelve Months) covering all the months of the year. Commissioned by the wealthy Antwerp banker Niclaes Jonghelinck , this work was almost certainly called 'January'. Other surviving pictures in the series include 'The Gloomy Day' (February), 'Haymaking' (July), 'The Harvesters' (August), and the return of the herd, (probably November). These panel paintings did much to secure Brueghel's reputation as one of the finest landscape artists of Northern Europe.
