' The Railway ' Edouard Manet, (French, 1832-1883) Oil on canvas, circa 1873. National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
'The Railway ' is one of Manet's most important and ravishing paintings. Manet was one of the first to take the railway station as a modern subject. Unlike Monet's series on trains , Manet used the trains and stations as a backdrop . The woman is Victorine Meurent , the woman who posed for Manet's most sensational pictures . ' Déjeuner sur l'Herbe ' (previously posted ) and ' Olympia ' (Musée d'Orsay) This painting , which drops you into the heart of urban Paris is the very essence of a modern picture. This was the only painting by Manet excepted by the Salon in 1873.
