Augustus John was one of the greatest portraitists of the 20th century . He was radical and wild in nature , fellow artist Wyndham Lewis described John as : ".. as a great man of action into whose hands the faries had stuck a brush instead of a sword ". After mastering the art of drawing at the Slade , John moved to London where he established the Chelsea Art School (1903-7) with friend William Orpen.
