' Alice in Wonderland ' George Dunlop Leslie (English 1835-1921) Oil on canvas , circa 1879 . Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Brighton.
The little girl lies snuggled in her mother's lap ( the artists wife Lydia and daughter Alice ) listening intently to the the book being read to her. Her glance is outward at the viewer ,but it is misty eyed since the artist George Dunlop Leslie has managed to capture the moment before her eyelids droop and sleep envelops her . Above all else the story is paramount , and a discarded doll together with a decidedly rigid sofa attest to the power of the story to overcome all distractions.
