' Hounds in a Kennel ' William Trood (English 1848-1899) Oil on canvas , circa 1898 . Private Collection . Born in 1848 William Trood was an animal painter , specialising in the painting of dogs in particular , and a sculptor . Schooled in England, his work is characterised by a highly finished , sympathetic quality with great attention to detail , yet is rarely sentimental . From his youth Trood studied dogs . He said " I have painted them since I was four years old , but not until I was twenty could I not paint one properly " At one time he kept a menagerie in the back garden of his Chelsea studio until the neighbours complained of noise . Afterwards he kept a fox, a badger and an otter running loose in his room with his dogs . He exhibited regularly in England but mainly at The Royal Academy from 1879 1898 . He died in London on the 3rd November , 1899 .
