' Ubbergen Castle ' Aelbert Cuyp (Dutch 1620-1691) Oil on canvas , circa 1655. The National Gallery , London .
Aelbert Jacobsz Cuyp (1620-1691) was one of the leading landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century . The most famous of a family of painters he is especially known for his large views ( see previous postings ) of the Dutch countryside in early morning or late afternoon light ....Ubbergen Castle is close to Nijmegen in the Province of Gelderland . The castle , which had long been a ruin , was pulled down in 1712. Because of it's partial destruction during the Spanish occupation in 1582 , the 14th century castle was seen by the Dutch as a national symbol . Thus Cuyp's luminous depiction of the building may well have provoked patriotic feelings in contemporary viewers .
